With mobile broadband data traffic doubling in each of the last five years, operators are under increasing pressure to expand backhaul transmission capacity to support new, high-bandwidth LTE services.  Operators have thus far preferred microwave to other forms of mobile backhaul, and the Metro Ethernet Forum estimates that some form of microwave transmission connects more than 60 percent of the world’s cellular base stations.  Microwave radio links are relatively quick to deploy, sites and planning permissions are easy to obtain, and microwave installations incur lower capex/opex than fiber-based solutions.

Many operators are now considering high frequency E-band microwave backhaul solutions – sometimes called "millimeter wave" or "mmW" – using 80GHz band radio frequencies from 71-86 GHz, well above the 6-38GHz band used for traditional cellular backhaul.  Huawei provides the industry’s first 2nd-generation E-band microwave solution, which sports a carrier-class design, high capacity, and enhanced features/performance.   With a large spectrum to support over 2.5Gbps ultra high capacity, these E-band microwave systems can be deployed as the complement to fiber or as a high density LTE backhaul network.
